I got the YouTube Silver Play Button. And I couldn't open the box.

When the email came from YouTube saying I’d crossed 100,000 subscribers, my father was still alive.

I remember thinking, I’m not going to tell him yet. I’ll wait for the actual button to arrive. I’ll hand it to him and watch his face. He knew what YouTube was, but probably not how these awards worked or what 100,000 subscribers meant. But he’d know his son did something.

That was the plan.

By the time the Silver Play Button was delivered to my door, my father had passed away.

The box sat there. Unopened. For two, maybe three days.

I just couldn’t.

And here’s the part that gets me.

100,000 subscribers. Most of them came for the spearfishing vlogs. Charna Island, Somar Goth, 24-hour fishing marathons, underwater hunts in the Arabian Sea.

My father is the reason any of that exists.

He’s the one who took me on fishing trips in Qatar when I was a kid. I have faded memories of his friends getting motion sickness in the boat, him catching the big ones, a box full of costly lures and hooks. He transferred his love for the ocean to me. Every time I dive into the Arabian Sea with a speargun, that’s him.

The channel that hit 100K? It was built on the love he gave me.

And the person I wanted to show it to was gone.

I eventually opened the box.

I didn’t feel happiness. Not really.

I felt something quieter. Like the achievement was real, but the one person who would’ve understood why it mattered wasn’t there anymore.

I also have one unedited vlog from my last fishing trip with him. I haven’t published it. I haven’t even opened the file. I don’t know if I ever will.

Here’s what I’ve learned since then.

Milestones don’t mean what you think they’ll mean
The number, the award, the button. None of it matters the way you imagine it will. What matters is who you get to turn to and say, “Look what we did.”

If your parents are still around, don’t wait for the perfect moment. Show them now. The messy, unfinished, not-yet-worthy version. Show them now.

They don’t need the Silver Play Button.
They just need you to share.

P.S. My dad once told me, “People are here because they believe you know the topic better than they do.” I think about that every time I hit record. I guess he was right about more things than I realized.
